57% Of Businesses Want A Simple Immigration System

Uncategorized

More than half of British businesses believe there will be a negative outcome to the economy if a new immigration system is introduced before it is simplified, as this would deter companies from using it.

According to the latest figures from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), 57 per cent of firms are concerned about this, as being able to access different skills and move workers around the European Union (EU) is a main feature on businesses’ lists of concerns about Brexit.

However, since the Conservatives won the general election earlier this month, plans to leave the EU will now go ahead, which is why British companies want clarification over what will happen to their flexible workforce.

CBI chief UK policy director Matthew Fell said: “It’s clear that’s weighing heavy on businesses minds is uncertainty about the new immigration system. Businesses believe that this can both support the economy and restore the public’s confidence that immigration is controlled.”

He went on to say the new system “needs to be simple”, as this will enable firms to access the labour they require in order to grow.

Mr Fell added that it is crucial businesses are able to find the skills and labour they need – from around Europe – as well as continue to have a relationship with the EU when it comes to trade.

With regards to Brexit, the government intends to add a new clause to the bill that prohibits an extension to the transition period beyond December 2020, despite being able to extend it for up to two years.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his priority is to “get Brexit done”, BBC News reported.
